Download THE Myers Woodshop Wasteboard For Hobby CNCs.

Many of you have seen my videos of me using my Shapeoko 3 XXL CNC and have seen my custom waste board.  Since I've gotten several messages about it I'm writing this blog post for everyone to access easily.  Although the file is made for the XXL it can easily be modified for any size CNC you have.
Click The Button Below To Purchase From My Etsy Shop:
It helps support what i do so I can create more free content :)
Picture

You'll want to download this as it's preprogrammed for a 3/4 thick sheet of mdf at 31" x 31" (the max cutting area of a XXL).
When you open the file you'll be looking at the bottom of the waste board.  The t-nuts come up from the bottom.  The larger circle is the base (washer-like) part of the t-nut and the smaller hole is where the shaft of the t-nut will go through.  I programmed the file to use the cutter that came with your machine, #201, 1/4 up-cut bit. If you have a 1/8 bit it would be ideal to 'drill' the smaller holes with it.  Generally, it is recommended to use a bit 1/3 of the size hole your going to create.  If your having problem drilling the hole with the #201, use a 1/8 upcut bit.
You'll want to place the sheet at the very front of the machine against the metal lip and make sure it's centered.  When you cut, you'll want to make sure that you use dust collection and wear breathing protection (I recommend the
RZ Mask) because MDF dust is extremely fine and very harmful.
After it's done cutting the file, i predrilled and countersunk a few holes around the waste board we just cut to screw it to the waste board that came with the machine.  Make sure you sink these screws at least 1/2 way through the material.  You don't want to accidentally hit them with a bit!  The 3/4 mdf we just cut with our hole pattern is called a supplemental waste board.  Why don't we just replace the waste board that came with our machine?  We do this because we will eventually mark up the board with through cuts and get to a point that it will need to be replaced.  Its much easier to unscrew a piece of mdf and replace the smaller board than take the whole machine apart and end up having to re-square the machine.  Unfortunately, You'll have to purchase a full 4x8 sheet of mdf to get the piece we need.
On some setups you'll see people have a L shaped fence on the front left of their machine.  This allows a very quick x,y zeroing because the same point will be used over and over.  Its a great choice if your doing constant, repeat work and can be added to this waste board easily.  I chose not to do this for two reasons: My work is never consistent, and I occasionally have pieces hang over the front and back of the machine (engraving table tops).  Instead I use a set of Oops Clamps from Suck-it Dust Boot Company and place two of them in parallel to form a 'fence'.  Not only are the extremely low profile, they are cheap and easy to replace if you have an oops situation.
If you end up making this waste board please tag me on social media or email me pictures of your set up!  I love seeing how others do their work and what modifications make your workflow more successful!
Happy CNCing!
Ben

Hi Ben,

First, great blog. You have no idea how much help this stuff is for a newb. Couple of questions though:

1. Have you thought about making the wasteboard a couple of inches larger each way? I know I saw that the cutting area was 33"x33" on the XXL. Why didn't you go the full size?

2. I can't get the files to download. They are saving as .txt files instead of .c2d. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for the response!

Nathan,
Even thought the said cutting area is 33x33" the router won't actually reach that left to right....and some of that cutting area is the area hanging off the front of the machine.
Did you right click on the file and save as .c2d? You cannot left click on the link or it will open in txt. Alternatively you can click the links on the right sidebar.

Just a quick note on the ".txt" file extension. For me, all I needed to do was to simply remove the ".txt" from the end of the file name (leaving it with ".c2d"). Works like a peach (at least on my Mac). Thanks again for all the excellent files and help Ben!

I right click save as and there is no option for .c2d file extension, just .txt and all files? Will CC change it into a .nc so that CM can run it.

Confused again, NEWB.

Hey Ben! Would you have any idea why when I load your wasteboard file into CC I keep getting a "not responding" and have to shut down? Do I need to update CC, currently running build 313.

Really appreciate all that you do for the Shapeoko community!!!

Hey Nic,
Carbide Create is pretty basic, and my file has lots of calculations. Even on my brand new, powerful, surface book 2 it will hang up. It's actually calculating the toolpaths in the background. When it looks like it hangs or 'not responding', let it run, get up and get a coke, give your kids and wife a kiss, and come back and it should 'catch up' to itself and respond again.

Thanks Ben... I did exactly that, kisses and all. (appreciate that your a family man!) It did eventually get caught up. I saved the gcode and ran in CM.

I then home the machine, move the spindle to the front L corner, then lower the Z to the the top of the wasteboard.(paper thickness) Cleared offsets, set zero, and then loaded the file. Once I run the file my machine really grinds along the X axis and seems to start in the middle of the board and works its way forward. I eventually have to stop it when it gets to the front of the board because the spindle starts to try to cut a path outside (front) of the machine. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

Ive successfully cut a few 1/4" signs before with no issues using Carbide touch probe.

Or should I just move this conversation to FB for further help. Not looking to be a bother....

Nic,
the wasteboard file is started in the CENTER of the board, not the lower left. :) draw an x from corner to corner to find your center and zero from that point :)

This is the first time that I have written to you I hope you will forgive me for writing to you about this subject. I have a shapeoko XL that I just purchased recently ( just got it together ). It does not respond when I plug it in.There are lights in the control board but no action ( nothing at all ) Is there any advice you can offer ? The machine locks up when I plug it in but nothing else..Robot shop has not offered any advice as to what to do next ( I am at a loss as to what to do about the problem, so if you have any ideas I would be grateful.

I had the same situation with my XXL recently. I found the Carbide tech support more than up to the task. Within a week of reporting the problem, I'd run through some tests on the phone with a tech and received a shiny new control board in the mail.
Everything just seems to work now. I'd advise shooting them an email and getting yourself in the queue.

Hey Ben,
Thank you for this blog, it has been a great help in getting my wife and I started. I bought this file on Etsy to help support you, and I think you charged too little for it :)

But I do have a question....the holes you pre-drilled and countersunk, I assume you flipped the board over and did it from that side. Did you use the CNC for that also? To make sure it is in the same spot (for the next time you need another one)? And then do you just screw through the countersunk hole direct into the base wasteboard? or do you have a t-nut installed already that you can screw into?

Sorry if this seems basic, but I'm still rather new to this hobby (or even woodworking in general)

Eduard,
I did it the lazy way and just flipped it over and drilled for the screws to hold it to the waste board. You could do it easily with the machine.

Hi Ben;

Now that you have built more than one table/bench on wheels to support your XXL

What size would you suggest?

I'm leaning toward 48" x 48" in order to get two pieces per sheet of mdf shelf stock. My half of our 24x24 garage has limited space and I don't think I want the desk/laptop too close.

Great job on your blog and YouTube. Thanks for your help. kc

One more thought for anyone... you could put a piece of rigid foam or the shipping cardboard under the "supplemental waste board" and screw it to the XXL while running this file. Just to avoid accidentally cutting into the XXL base board.

I don't think I ever did. The T Track works but I kept having times when the clamps just wouldn't reach what i was cutting. And I can't tell you the number of bits i broke while moving the machine around on clamps.

I'm using these Rockler t-track stops and inline cam clamp:
https://www.rockler.com/workshop-accessories/workbenches-and-tops/t-track-stops
https://www.rockler.com/rockler-t-track-inline-cam-clamp

They work pretty well at holding things in place and are low profile so they don't stick up very high. The stops stick up 11/16ths of an inch from the wasteboard surface, and the inline cam clamp sticks up 1 and 1/4 inch from the wastboard surface.

The main issue I have is when I want to cut something from a small piece of wood (not reaching like you said). So I am considering making a version of your board that I could clamp down and then smaller things could be cut on that. I don't need the depth at all, everything I cut is 3/4" or less thick.

I've seen some people do a version of this with some t track every few inches. might be the hybrid you'd like.

Hi Ben, thanks so much for putting this together. Question though. Have you heard of anyone having the 201 bit grab into the wood and cause significant tear out when drilling the holes? I ran the program this afternoon and all was good milling the recess, first through hole and bam! It bogged down and bit into the wood causing some nice damage. The bit survived luckily... Any thoughts?

Thanks

Did it drag the wasteboard? did you have it secured down with brads or nails? Hard to tell without seeing it.

It did move it when it grabbed. I didn't nail it down because I didn't want the bit to hit the nails because I put it in the wrong spot. I guess the couple of pieces of double sided tape was not enough to hold it down.

Hey Ben! I just got up and running with my Shapeoko XL, have watched a bunch of your videos (actually your in depth side by side with the X-carve is was finalized my choice) and they've been extremely helpful.

I am about to run your script for the XL wasteboard, I was wondering if the home position is set within your code? Or will I just choose where I'd like it to start? based on the size of the wasteboard I cut? I saw on another comment that you programmed it to start from the center - is that home? or is that just the first move?

I've literally only done the Hello World file at this point so I'm guessing the answer to these questions might become clear once I run it but figured I'd try to check in beforehand. Thanks so much for all your in depth info on this thing..

I’d do a screw in the 4 corners. I’d hate for the double sided tape to fail and you lose the whole sheet of mdf

Do you think it would be a problem to screw down the MDF for the back side cuts then flip it over and use the same holes to permanently secure to the MDF down, could the reverse threading of the screws the second time through cause it to become loose? Would it be better to put the screw holes in different places so the final securing of the MDF would be a "first" time drill down or use a smaller screw first?

Travis,
RIGHT CLICK, SAVE AS so you won't get the scripts. If nothing pops up with the c2d 1) you have an older version of carbide create, update or 2) your double clicking on the file to open carbide create, you need to open create, THEN click open within create to actually open the file.

One issue I encountered was that your tolerances are too tight for the larger circle recesses. If the t nuts aren't perfectly sized, they will not enter the hole properly. Also, if the machine isn't perfectly square, the t nuts will also have difficulty lining up.

I ended up making those larger holes larger so that my t nuts fit.

I am currently making my waste board per your file and it is working great. once I get done Im going to flatten it. in your video and file you use a 1.50" flattening bit. I am brand new to this and ended up getting a Whiteside spoilboard surfacing bit from woodcraft. It is only a 1.0" bit and I am wondering how I change the tool in carbide create. when I go to the bit area, my flattening bit is not listed. also do I have to change any other paths or will the program adjust for the smaller bit? Thanks for what you do for us beginners. You make this so much easier and enjoyable

Hey Ben,

I flattened the waste board BEFORE drilling the T Nut Holes. Then when I drilled the T nut holes I noticed that there was about ¼" diff in some of the holes that were drilled. If I ran the flattening file prior, shouldn't all of these holes have been flat? I did notice that I have a bit of a tramming issue to fix, but I am just curious if I am way off base where.

If you flattened the wasteboard prior to milling the Tnut hols they should all be similar in depth from the top surface, but not necessarily the bottom surface. However remember this will be the bottom of the wasteboard once the Tnuts are inserted and the board is flipped over. However don't flatten first. Your wasteboard will be anchored to what we assume is an un-flat baseboard surface. If the baseboard is not uniformly bowed, similar left to right and top to bottom, the end result will still be a less than flat surface. You will get a much better result if you merely flatten the wasteboard once its properly installed. At that point you know the surface is true to the router.

I downloaded the 16x16 version of the wasteboard. When trying to run it. I found that the loaded file has the starting point set to front left. The machine is set to shapeoko xxl. I changed these settings to center and shapeoko 3. But when trying to run the router goes to the right and back and starts making nosie such that I have to stop the program. I noticed in your run the router goes left and back. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. I've run the hello word and it ran correctly. I've used the laser to burn an image and it worked. Which makes me believe that x and y go in the correct direction.

I have checked the code that I generated from your file in universal g code sender and it looks good, but the carbide motion keeps sending my machine somewhere past the north east corner.

I’ve tried other g code and it seems to work fine.

I had centered off of the board I had cut which was deeper than what the file called for. So my zero was north of where it should be. This caused the shapeoko to lose steps as it hit the north limit.

When I changed the dimensions to the 31"x14.5" for the XL. The machine is still trying to go past its limits and starts making a grinding noise. Do you have an adjusted file for this? Best guess is your machine is not true left to right. A quick and dirty test would be to strap a pencil to the router body and use the jog feature to bring your router near the front of your unit. Drive down in z carefully to mark your wasteboard. Now jog across your waste board in the X direction, leaving the Y unmoved. Once complete measure the distance on either side to your front base plate. Ideally the measurements will be identical. If not I would review the section on squaring your machine.
Good Luck

The only thing I did different then you, I used the Bitsetter at the start. Would that cause any issues on why it is not cutting deep enough?

Any feedback would be helpful!

What thickness of wasteboard were you using? I believe this file is setup for 3/4 inch.

Ben, I watched your video for making the wasteboard. I liked it a lot. Are you drilling a 5/16 through hole and using 1/4-20 t nuts and what length bolts should I get? I had already ordered the 1/4-20 t nuts before I watched your video

Ed
The length of the bolts will largely depend on the height of the materials you are anchoring down. Since you really only need 4 or so hold downs on most parts I suggest getting a few different lengths. Use the shortest ones that will work for your project. Remember the higher something sticks out above your work surface the more likely you will catch the router bit accidentally.
Good Luck

Ben, It is my understanding that you were going to design a waste board using the matchfit dovetail bit. Have you done anything in this direction. Also it would be helpful for us newbies that purchased the Onefinity if you could show us how you would square your waste board to the machine. Thanks much really enjoy your content.

Hey Ben,

Just a heads up the hole in the very lower left of your file for the XL wasteboard seems to be miss-centered on the tee nut hole. Meaning the two holes aren't concentric. I wasn't sure if that was done for a purpose or not. Thanks a lot for your resources. I am just getting started out and your videos and tutorials have been a big help.

Greetings Ben and thanks for sharing your XXL wasteboard project.

Greetings to all the other CNC guys and gals here too, I am a long time woodworker but new at the CNC. Has anyone experienced the through holes starting the operation too high above the material or is it just my setup? I have the bitsetter and the bitzero probe being used. (just to note.. the counterbores turned out perfect at 0.081 deep) I tried separating the gcode and using a 0.125 bit for the through holes but was doing the same thing (starting about a half inch above the material). I ended up just drilling all the holes by hand so i could get started with other projects but wanted to fix this before the next wasteboard cut was done.

Hey great idea and thank you for creating good usable content for newbies to save money. I really appreciate it. Quick question I can’t get enough of the threaded Inserts on Amazon wiill the threaded ones in 3d carbide work for this file

Your link for the download the files is displaying your code for the page. So you have part of the code that displays the link is calling for it to display the code instead. Check your code.

I bought the code for the wasteboard and when the job starts the spindle moves around above the surface (approx2") above the MDF sheet.

Ben,

Looks like the link to the washers takes me to a weird ad or something in the Amazon store...perhaps the washers are no longer available? If that’s the case, can you provide the details of what washers would suffice?

Thanks,

Jske

I just purchased these but plan on measuring them with my calipers prior to starting the job. Or, you could do a test run on a piece of scrap MDF to check for fit before running the entire file.

I’m going to purchase your XL wasteboard file from Etsy but I was wondering what would be the dimensions of the MDF? I know for the XXL you used 32x32 and I’m figuring you arrived at that by measuring the furthest the machine can reach but was wondering what the presets are for the wasteboard which is in the file you created with CM. Thanks for your help.

Hey Ben,

Not sure if you check this that much but I am trying to watch your video again on creating a wasteboard. The old video has link to save as or to copy and paste. But on this updated site I do not see anywhere to click or save as. Can you help me out with this?
